Dit komt misschien omdat het erg lijkt op het Datejust-horloge en velen gaan ervan uit dat ze hetzelfde zijn. De oorsprong: vroege Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date-modellen
Halverwege de jaren vijftig maakte de Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date zijn debuut. Voor een bepaalde context bracht Rolex de Datejust uit in 1945 en deze was uitgerust met een kast van 36 mm. Aan de andere kant had de Date een iets kleinere kastmaat van 34 mm. Hoewel de Rolex Date voor heren op dat moment dezelfde maat had als de Air-King voor heren, bood het de extra functionaliteit van het datumvenster. Vroege modellen van de Rolex Date bevatten de roestvrijstalen Date ref. 6530 met een gladde bezel, de roestvrijstalen datum ref. 6535 met een door een motor gedraaide bezel en de roestvrijstalen datum ref. 6534 met een witgouden gekartelde bezel. De Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date-modellen uit de jaren 60 en 70
In navolging van de ref. 65xx-serie Date-modellen introduceerde Rolex in de jaren zestig de 15xx-referentiefamilie van de Oyster Perpetual Date. Dit tijdperk van Rolex Date-horloges liep eerst op Calibre 1565 (18.000 bph) en vervolgens op de snellere Calibre 1575 (werkend op 19.800 bph). Rolex-wijzerplaten met tritium zijn gemarkeerd met "T SWISS T", "T Swiss Made T" of "Swiss-T <25" onder de 6 uur-markering.
Qua materiaal- en stijlkeuzes is er de roestvrijstalen Rolex Date ref.1500 met een gladde bezel, de roestvrijstalen Rolex Date ref. 1501 met een door een motor gedraaide stalen bezel, de tweekleurige Rolex Date ref. 1505, de Rolex Date ref. 1550, de 14k geelgouden Rolex Date ref. 1503, en de 18k geelgouden Rolex Date ref. 1507.
Een bijzonder opmerkelijk model binnen deze familie is de Rolex Date 1530, die Rolex maakte van 1975 tot 1977. Deze roestvrijstalen modellen hebben dezelfde hoekige kast en geïntegreerde band als de Oysterquartz-horloges (uitgebracht in 1977), maar waren uitgerust met mechanische uurwerken terwijl Rolex zijn in-house quartz uurwerk nog aan het perfectioneren was. Interessant genoeg was dit het eerste Date-model met een saffierglas in plaats van een acrylglas. Toch zou het saffierglas pas in de jaren negentig weer op de Date-modellen verschijnen.

De Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date-modellen uit de jaren 80
De jaren tachtig luidden een nieuwe generatie Date-modellen in, uitgerust met de Calibre 3035 en met de referentienummers 150xx. Datummodellen die in dit tijdperk zijn gemaakt, hebben ook vaak diamanten uurmarkeringen of diamanten bezels, een extra teken van luxe bovenop een toch al indrukwekkende reeks uurwerken. Dit is een ander aantrekkelijk kenmerk voor liefhebbers die op zoek zijn naar tweedehands horloges.
De Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date-modellen uit de jaren 90
In 1988 onthulde Rolex zijn nieuwste zelfopwindende uurwerk met datum in de vorm van het kaliber 3135. In plaats van zelf lichtgevend te zijn zoals tritium of radium, moet Luminova eerst worden "opgeladen" door een lichtbron, waarna het blijft gloeien in het donker. Omdat toen Rolex Luminova adopteerde, eerder Date ref. 152xx-modellen hebben tritium op de wijzerplaat (gemarkeerd met "T SWISS MADE T" onder 6 uur) en ref. 152xx-modellen hebben Luminova (gemarkeerd met SWISS onder 6 uur).

De Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date-modellen uit de jaren 2000

Er is de Date ref 115200 met een koepelvormige bezel, de Date ref. 115234 met een witgouden gekartelde bezel en de (kortstondige) datumreferentie. 115210 met een door de motor gedraaide ring.
